For the last ten years I’ve pretty much been doing the same eye makeup and recently I have really wanted to mix things up.

So when my good friend and makeup artistDorothyInez invited me to her Simply Gorgeous Eyes class, I was excited to access her genius and learn more. (You may remember DorothyInez as the makeup artist from the recent Sell Your Sole Consignment Boutique photo shoot.)

With six of us in the class, DorothyInez demonstrated makeup techniques on a model, then gave us a chance to practice the new techniques on our own faces while giving feedback on our application. Her teaching style is really playful, informative, and encouraging which made for an enjoyable class.

Here are some great take-aways I walked away with:

  1. Makeup can help you create the perfect face. Using the right makeup placement, you can draw attention to certain areas of your face and give the illusion of a perfect face.
  2. When applying eye shadow, look down rather than closing your eyes. When we close our eyes, it can cause our eyelid to scrunch. It may help to tilt your head back.
  3. When holding a makeup brush, hold it from the end for feather-light application. When you hold from the middle of the brush, you obscure your line of vision, blocking you from seeing your progress, and your application is too heavy.
  4. When you’re applying your makeup, relax! Do you have the tendency of opening your eyes really wide when applying your eye makeup? I do! Don’t forget to relax your facial muscles!
  5. When you clean your makeup brushes, squeeze them dry, then lightly reshape. No wringing out the water! Be kind to your brushes and they will last for a long time.
  6. Dark colors close down the eye while light colors open it up. For example, if you have small eyes, lining the waterline on the lower part of your eye with a white pencil will make them look larger.
  7. Before applying fake lashes, draw a thin line on the base of the lashes so there isn’t a gap between your natural lashes and the falsies.
  8. When applying the glue to the false lashes, let the glue dry for 30-60 seconds before application, rather than right away when the glue is still wet.
  9. Start applying the falsies from the outside of the eye in at the base of your lashes. Use closed tweezers to press down the lashes against your skin.
  10. Every woman is beautiful.
My Before and After---- I am amazed at the difference the falsies made.

At the end of the class I was feeling so glamorous! I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve worn false eyelashes so it was a real treat to play around with this medium.
Even DorothyInez who swears by MAC and Motives will use the $4 lashes from Target. One of the gals brought lashes from e.l.f. and they were really long and lovely.
If you want to tap into DorothyInez’s genius, she is hosting another Simply Glamorous Eyes Workshop on Saturday, August 4rd in Tacoma specifically for evening eyes. If you can’t attend, she also offers Online Makeup Classes via Skype. Check it out!

So... this has been on my mind for AWHILE!  So today after being called Dorothy one more time, I just decided to share it. Many of you may be saying, girl you are crazy, but that's ok.  lol

In America, we tend to want to shorten peoples names instead of Susan, we say Suzie, Joseph, we say Joe and instead of DOROTHYINEZ, we say "Dorothy" without even asking if they mind.  I have found as I have tried these past few month to "correct" people that is is VERY UNCOMFORTABLE to do but it must be done because it's apart of my branding, just like Minister of Beauty™.  In fact, several women who also have difficult names told me it doesn't even matter to them anymore because they are used to it.  USED TO IT???  REALLY?  Why do we have to get used to be called anything but our name.  If someone decided to call you _______________(you fill it in) would you just go with that too?

For 40+ years I was called Inez, which I love! But when I was called to start a business to serve  women, I felt God inspired me to use my first and middle name TOGETHER, Not Dorothy, Not Inez, DorothyInez. My close friends and family call me Inez of course and that's ok.

I believe our names are divinely given to us.  Most parents take the time to specially choose your name, they think long and hard some even have arguments about it.  I think it is a disrespect to that person to call them anything other than their given name without their permission.  I know NONE of you meant ANY disrespect, but I am just making a point.  I often feel bad for immigrant Americans who come up with "American" names because no one want to try to pronounce their given name.  It breaks my heart that Min Joo has to be "Helen" because we refuse to TRY to pronounce her name or Mary Susan has to just be Mary because it takes too long to say her full name.

Our names have meaning and I bet if you looked up yours, you would find that in some way you are living into that name because you have been called it for however many years. My name is Dorothy (Gift of God) and Inez (With A Pure Heart) that is who I am called to be to EVERY woman who works with me. Each time you say my name, I am reminded of my purpose and calling. It may seem long but its pretty easy to say once you get it. :-)

I encourage you the next time you meet someone to ask what they like to be called don't just assume Suzanne wants to be called Suzy.  She just doesn't have the courage to correct you.  I can testify that it is so hard to do.

Here's a video also explaining my logo AND name. I hope you understand where I am coming from. So please No more DOROTHY'S I share this with you in ♥

I have been thinking about what to to write this week.  When I asked for topic ideas, someone suggested, "Follow the Yellow Brick Road."  Really???  All my life I have battled Wizard of Oz jokes because of my name.  So to write an email associated with Oz is a bit uncomfortable BUT me being the self-development addict that I am, I took on the challenge of looking at the "Yellow Brick Road" in a different way.  So here goes...tell me what you think.

As we all know, Dorothy, spends a majority of the movie trying to get home.  Everywhere she went, they would say, "Follow the yellow brick road."  What is the yellow brick road?  To Dorothy, following the yellow brick road was her way home, her way to happiness and the ones she loved.

Along this yellow brick road Dorothy finds some amazing friends while constantly battling the roadblocks set forth by the Wicked Witch West.   Despite all her fears, Dorothy remained focused and determined to make it to OZ because "there's no place like home."

THEN...when she gets to OZ, the good witch, Glenda tells her she had the power to get home all along.  Scarecrow asks, "Why didn't you tell her?"  Glenda responds, "If I told her she wouldn't have believed me.  She had to learn it for herself." Then Tinman asks, "What have you learned Dorothy?", and she replies,  "It wasn't enough to want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em.  If I ever go looking for my hearts desire again I won't go looking any further than my own backyard.  Cause if its isn't there, I never lost it to begin with." Scarecrow says, "But that's so easy. I should have thought of it for you."  Then Glenda says no she had to find out for herself.

So what can we learn from Dorothy's journey?  The first thing that comes to my mind is FOCUS.  Stay focused on what you want and where you see yourself going.  If you watched Oprah interview Tony Robbins and walk across HOT COALS, the other night you saw that keeping her head up and focused she was able to make the walk across fire.  What is YOUR focus?  Do you get distracted easily?  What small shift can you make that would keep you on track?

The next thing that touches me is that the Scarecrow asked, "Why didn't you tell her?" and Glenda said, "Because she wouldn't have believed me."  Wow....how many times has someone tried to help you avoid the pain or told you that you could do something but YOU didn't believe them?  So instead of taking the advice you when ahead with that bad relationship or you didn't go for your dream because FEAR had you believing you couldn't do it.  It took being hurt or losing your job for you to realize I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED.  Most of us have to learn from our mistakes and most of all WE HAVE TO BELIEVE in ourselves.  We must believe we are worth being treated right, getting paid for what we bring to a client and living a life WE LOVE.

Lastly, Dorothy discovered BELIEF.  A belief that could only come from within.  She believed the only way home was that journey to OZ and nothing was going to stop her!  Definitely not a Wicked Witch!  No one can make YOU believe but what someone CAN do is INSPIRE you to believe, that's what I think her three friends did along the way.  "Home" already existed within Dorothy she just had to be willing and open to find it.  How open are you to following the "yellow brick road" to a new you, career or life?  What negative beliefs about who you are and what you can achieve are holding you back from living YOUR most beautiful life?

When Dorothy said, "There's no place like home," she was right.  I have learned real living comes from knowing and loving me for all that I am and all that I am not.  For all that I am not, I challenge myself to keep growing into all that I know I am called to BE.  I challenge you to discover what's inside your home.  What gifts and talents do you have INSIDE that could be shared with the world?  Enlist the help of friends, family or even a coach that will stand with you and belief in all that you are and all that you could be because its right there in your own backyard.
